Chapter 57 · Account, Plans, and Privacy

Leaving, and Taking Everything With You

Closing a Storskarvia account takes one password and one button. This chapter covers what to collect before you press it, what the button removes, what it leaves in your own storage, and the three messages that mean it stopped partway.

Why there is nothing to rescue

If your documents are saved to Dropbox, Google Drive or a folder on your computer, the book has been living there all along. Where Your Work Lives explains the arrangement: every save writes a .skarvia.json and a plain .txt into your storage, and Storskarvia keeps a working copy on its side so the editor and the checks can run. Deleting the account throws away the working copy. The files in your storage were never Storskarvia's to throw away.

Two kinds of document are the exception, and they are why the next section exists:

  • A document you never gave a home. If you answered Not now to "Where should this document live?", the only copy is Storskarvia's. Deleting the account deletes it.
  • A zero-retention document whose cloud file you have since moved or deleted. Storskarvia holds no text for it, so there is nothing on either side.

Download everything first

On the Account page, under Your data, press Download everything (.zip). You get one file named storskarvia-export-date.zip containing:

Inside the archiveWhat it is
account.jsonYour email, plan, sign-up date, founder number if you have one, the date of the export, and a list of your projects with how many documents each holds.
One .zip per projectNamed after the project. Inside, binder folders become real folders, and each document becomes a readable .txt plus a .skarvia.json that keeps everything, formatting and marks included.

The .txt is the copy written for people: pending suggestions are left out, so it reads the way the document reads. The .skarvia.json is the complete record. Be aware that Storskarvia's importer does not read .skarvia.json files today, so a future account cannot take one back in. If you might return, or want your screenplay's layout in another program, export the documents you care about as Final Draft, Fountain or Word as well. Exporting Word, Final Draft, Fountain, and Text covers those. A single project can also be downloaded from its own page with ⬇ Download project (.zip).

Two things can go wrong with the download:

  • A file ending .MISSING.txt. That chapter uses zero retention and Storskarvia could not fetch it from your cloud while building the archive, usually because the connection had expired or been disconnected. No text was lost: the only copy is in your storage. Reconnect (see When Sync Goes Wrong) and download again. Do this before you disconnect anything.
  • A "Too many requests" refusal. Each archive fetches every zero-retention chapter from your storage, so the download is limited to three per hour. Wait for the hour to pass.

What deletion leaves alone

  • Every file already written to your Dropbox, your Google Drive, or a folder on your computer: the .skarvia.json, the .txt, the chapter files and the .versions/ folder.
  • Comments you left on other people's shared documents. The thread keeps its shape so their document still makes sense, and your comments stop carrying your name.
  • Storskarvia's place in your Dropbox or Google account. Deletion discards Storskarvia's tokens, so it can no longer reach your storage, but it does not tell Dropbox or Google. The app stays listed among the connected apps in those accounts' own settings until you remove it there.

What deletion removes

All of it goes at once, from the live database:

  • Your account, email address and password.
  • Every project, with its documents, versions, findings from checks, comments, share links, Story Bible and portraits, timeline, outline board, collections and the files on your research shelf.
  • Anyone you shared a document with loses access to it, and the shares that let you into other people's documents are removed.
  • Your MCP access keys, so a connected AI assistant stops working at once.
  • Any Storskarvia subscription, cancelled immediately. The Cancel plan route lets a plan run to the end of the period; deletion ends it on the spot, because there is no account left to use it.
  • A founder number. Founder seats are never reissued, so yours is retired with the account.

Copies of deleted data can remain in Storskarvia's database backups for about two weeks before they roll off. Those backups exist to recover from a server failure, and nobody can restore one account from them.

Deleting the account

  1. Download everything, as above, and open the archive to check it.
  2. On the Account page, scroll to the last section, Delete account.
  3. Type your current password into Confirm with your password. Forgotten it? Use Reset by email first. The form asks for the password only, even if you have two-step sign-in turned on.
  4. Press Delete my account. Your browser asks "Delete your account and everything in it? This cannot be undone." Choose OK.

You are signed out and land on the Storskarvia home page.

When it does not go through

Message on the Account pageWhat happened, and what to do
"Enter your current password to delete your account."The password did not match. Nothing was changed. Try again, or reset it by email.
"We couldn't reach billing to cancel your subscription just now, so we didn't delete your account."Storskarvia cancels the subscription before it deletes anything, and refuses to delete an account it cannot confirm has stopped billing. Nothing was cancelled or deleted. Wait a few minutes and try again.
"Your subscription was cancelled but we could not finish deleting the account."Billing has stopped, and the deletion was rolled back, so your account and work are all still there. Press the button again. If it keeps happening, write to the address at the foot of the privacy policy and the deletion will be finished by hand.

If you only want to stop paying

Deleting the account is the long way round to cancelling. Cancel plan, under Billing on the same page, keeps the paid plan until the period ends and then moves you to Free, with every project left where it was. Plans and Allowances walks through it, and Your Data and Your Privacy covers what Storskarvia holds while you stay.
