Chapter 60 · Account, Plans, and Privacy

Cookie Preferences and the Emails We Send

Storskarvia asks you two small questions that have nothing to do with writing: may it measure how you found the site, and may it send you the occasional letter. This chapter covers both answers, how to change them, and the emails that arrive whatever you answer, because some of them are how your account stays yours.

The one cookie you cannot refuse

Storskarvia sets one cookie it cannot work without, skarvia_session, which keeps you signed in. It lasts seven days from your last visit and never more than fourteen days from when you signed in; after that you are asked for your password again. Nothing optional rides on it, and it is never part of the measurement question below.

Your light or dark theme is kept in your browser's own storage and never reaches the server.

The measurement question

Measurement means three things, and one answer covers all of them:

WhatWhat it doesHow long
Campaign cookie, sk_srcRemembers how you first arrived: the labels on a link Storskarvia tagged, the site that linked to you, the page you landed on, and any referral code. If you sign up, that is recorded against your account and passed to the service that sends Storskarvia's email.30 days
Page-view statistics, _gaCounts visits and which pages get read. Google receives the page address and a random browser id, never your name.Up to two years
An advertising pixelWhere Storskarvia advertises, it may tell Meta that a browser visited a page or created an account.Set by Meta

Not every row is switched on at any given moment. The Cookie preferences page says which ones are in use today, and anything switched on later falls under the answer you have already given. Your writing is never part of any of it.

Who gets asked. In the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, nothing optional is set until you say yes, and a bar at the bottom of the page asks May we… remember which link or advertisement brought you here? with two buttons, No thanks and Allow. Neither is preselected. If Storskarvia cannot tell where you are, it treats you as one of those places and asks. Everywhere else there is no banner: measurement runs unless you say no, and a no is honoured everywhere.

Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends this signal, Storskarvia treats it as a standing no. You see no banner, no campaign cookie is set, no pixel loads, and the buttons on the preferences page cannot override it. To allow measurement, turn the signal off in your browser first.

Declining changes nothing about how Storskarvia works for you.

Changing your answer

  1. Follow Cookie preferences in the footer of any page. It works whether or not you were ever shown the banner.
  2. Read the box under Your current answer. It says yes, no, that you have not answered yet, or that your browser is sending Global Privacy Control.
  3. Press No thanks or Allow measurement. The page reloads with the new answer in place.

The answer is stored in a cookie called sk_consent for six months, and then you are asked again. Choosing No thanks also removes the campaign cookie and the page-view statistics cookies if they were set, so a no stops what a yes had started.

The answer belongs to the browser, not to your account. Your laptop and your phone each answer separately, and clearing your cookies or using a private window forgets the answer.

Emails you always get

These are service messages. They carry links you need or tell you about money, and you cannot opt out of them while you hold an account.

EmailWhen it arrives
Verify your emailThe moment the account is created. The link lasts 24 hours.
WelcomeWhen you click the verification link. A founder's welcome carries their founder number instead.
Password resetWhen you ask for one. The link lasts one hour and works once.
Password changedAfter any password change or reset. If you did not make the change, someone else did: reset the password at once.
ReceiptWhen a paid plan starts.
Subscription cancelledWhen a paid plan ends.
Payment problemWhen a card is declined. Up to three notices, each a little firmer, the last one before the subscription ends.
Renewal reminderBefore a yearly plan renews, about 30 days ahead and never fewer than 15. A monthly plan gets one reminder a year.
List confirmationOnce, when you subscribe from the footer (see below).

Billing is covered in Plans and Allowances, and password resets in Account Settings and Passwords.

Emails you choose

The signup form has one checkbox, Send me occasional writing craft notes and Storskarvia news. Unsubscribe anytime. It starts unticked for everyone. Leave it alone and you get service email only.

Tick it and you may also receive:

  • Craft notes and Storskarvia news, now and then.
  • A short check-in if you stop using Storskarvia for a while, at most one each at 14, 30 and 45 days. Coming back resets the clock.

Skipped the box and changed your mind? While signed out, most pages show a Subscribe field at the foot, under Field notes from the staff. Entering your address there is the same yes as the checkbox, and a one-time confirmation follows.

Stopping marketing email

Every marketing email carries an unsubscribe link, and that link is the switch. The Account page has no email setting, so do not go looking for one there. If the link fails you, write to us from the Support page and we will take you off by hand.

Before you delete your account, unsubscribe first. Deleting the account removes your address from Storskarvia's own database, as Leaving, and Taking Everything With You describes, but the list that carries marketing email is kept separately, and deletion does not reach it. If you have already deleted the account, ask Support to remove the address.

When something goes wrong

What you seeWhat it means, and what to do
The banner comes back on every visit.Your browser is not keeping the sk_consent cookie: a private window, a cookie blocker, or cookies cleared on exit. Allow cookies for this site, or accept seeing the question.
The banner came back after months.Answers last six months. Answer again.
Allow measurement changes nothing. The preferences page says your browser is sending Global Privacy Control. That signal wins until you turn it off.
No verification email.Check spam. Then use Resend link in the verification notice at the top of the Studio. Resends are limited to five an hour.
That verification link is invalid or expired. Sign in and we'll send a fresh one.The link is older than 24 hours. Sign in and press Resend link.
No password reset email. The form gives the same answer whether or not an account exists, so check you typed the address you signed up with, then check spam.
Marketing email after unsubscribing or deleting.Write to Support with the address it arrived at.

What Storskarvia holds about you, and what it sends to its model provider, is in Your Data and Your Privacy. The full cookie list is in the privacy policy.
