Chapter 58 · Account, Plans, and Privacy
The Founders' Beta
The first hundred accounts in Storskarvia are founding accounts. Each one carries a number, a price that holds for as long as you keep it, a badge, an optional place on a public wall, and a button in the editor that reaches the person who built the thing. This chapter covers what a seat is, what it is not, and what to do when one of its parts misbehaves.
How a seat is given
There is nothing to apply for and no box to tick. While the beta is open, every new account takes the next founding seat as it is created, in the order people arrive. Your number runs from 001 to 100, and it is yours from the moment the account exists.
The numbers do not always run in an unbroken line. A few are held back, scattered through the range, to be given by hand to people the beta owes something to. If you are 041 and the next person to sign up is 043, that is the reason, and nobody can tell a held-back number from any other by looking at it.
A seat belongs to the account it was given to. Storskarvia has no way to move one to a different email address or a different account.
What a seat is worth
A seat is an offer and not a plan. Your account starts on Free, the same as everybody's, with Free's allowance. What the seat adds is half price on whichever paid plan you choose, for as long as you keep it:
| Plan | Normal price | Founder price |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $14 a month | $7.00 a month |
| Studio | $29 a month | $14.50 a month |
The discount is written against your account on the day the seat is taken. A price decided later cannot reach back and change it. Until you upgrade, your Studio page opens with a notice, "You are founder 041. Your price is waiting." (with your own number), and a Claim your founder price link to the pricing page, where your price appears with the normal one struck through. You need a confirmed email address before any upgrade goes through.
Checkout applies the discount by itself, on the yearly plans too. There is no code to type, and the promotion code field does not appear for founders. The full details of upgrading, and the one message a founder's checkout can refuse with, are in Plans and Allowances. Fact-check packs are the exception: they cost the same for everybody, as Buying More Checks explains.
The founder card
Open Account and a founding account shows a card at the top, headed You are number 041 of 100. It holds everything a seat lets you control:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Download your badge | Saves your badge as a picture |
| See the wall | Opens the public founders page |
| List me on the public founders page | Puts your number and name on the wall. Off until you tick it. |
| The name box (The name to show) | The name used on the wall and on your badge, up to 80 characters |
There is no Save button. The tick box saves the moment you change it, and the name saves a moment after you stop typing. A small Saved appears beside the name box to confirm it.
Your badge
The badge is a 1200 by 630 picture, the size social networks use for a link preview, named
skarvia-founder-041.png after your number. It shows your number large, "of 100" beside
it, and underneath, the name from your founder card. With no name set, it reads One of the
first hundred writers. Long names are cut at 40 characters on the badge.
The badge shows your name whether or not you are listed on the wall. The tick box governs the public page; what you do with your own badge is up to you. A name you change or clear shows on the next badge anybody downloads, including through the link in your welcome email.
That email arrives when you confirm your address, and it carries your number, a link to the badge, the wall, and the pricing page. The badge link in it works on a phone you have never signed in on.
The founders wall
The page at /founders lists the founders who asked to be listed, in number order, and says how many seats have been taken and how many are still open. Everybody with a seat is counted. Only the founders who ticked the box are named. If you tick it and leave the name box empty, the wall shows your number beside A writer.
Untick the box and you come off the wall straight away. Your seat, your price, and your badge stay exactly as they were.
The founders' line
In the editor, a founding account has a small button marked with its number, Founder 041, in the bottom left corner of the screen (at the top right on a phone). Press it and a dialog opens, titled Tell me what is wrong with it. Type what annoyed you or what you expected to work, and press Send it, or Not now to close it.
The note goes to Chris, who made Storskarvia, with your founder number and the kind of document and page you were on, so the reply can be an answer rather than a question about where you were. Half a sentence is enough. When it has gone, the status bar says Sent to Chris. Thank you. Notes are capped at 4,000 characters, and anything past that is cut off.
Ordinary accounts do not see this button. It exists because a hundred people can each be answered by a person.
When the beta is full
When every open seat is taken, or the seats are paused, signing up stops. The signup page becomes All 100 seats are taken. with an email box and a Tell me when it opens button, which puts you on a list for the day Storskarvia opens to everyone. The pricing page says No founding seats are available, or Founding seats are paused while signups are held.
Nobody already inside is affected. Existing accounts sign in as normal, and an account that is not a founding account can still upgrade at the normal price.
A seat that is spent stays spent. If founder 050 closes their account, 050 is retired and not handed to the next person, so no two people can ever truthfully claim the same number. Closing an account is covered in Leaving, and Taking Everything With You.
When something goes wrong
| You see | What happened | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The signup form sends you to All 100 seats are taken. | The last open seat went between loading the form and pressing the button. No account was made. | Leave your address in the box; it is already filled in |
| That badge link is not valid. | The link in your welcome email stopped working after a password change, a reset, or Sign out everywhere | Sign in and press Download your badge on the Account page |
| Sign in to get your badge. | You opened the plain badge address while signed out | Sign in first, or use the link from your welcome email |
| Say something first. | You pressed Send it with an empty note | Type the note, then send |
| A note that did not send | The connection dropped, or you sent more than twenty notes in an hour | Your note stays in the box. Wait a moment and press Send it again. |
| A message that the name or tick box was not saved | The change did not reach Storskarvia | Change it again; the card saves on every change |
| Your Studio page has no founder notice | You are already on a paid plan, or the account has no seat | Check the top of the Account page for the founder card |
Everything else about your account, from your name on title pages to two-step sign-in, is in Account Settings.
